The Three Content Pillars You Can Post Forever

2 min read

Most creators burn out because every post is a fresh idea built from nothing. The blank-page tax compounds — after eight weeks of inventing topics from scratch, the creative well runs dry and posting becomes a chore. Pillars solve this by giving you a structure to riff inside, so the daily question stops being "what should I post?" and becomes "which pillar am I posting under today?"

The three pillars (and why these three)

  • Teach. A useful tactic, framework, or insight. Builds authority and gets saved.
  • Tell. A story, observation, or behind-the-scenes moment. Builds personality and gets shared.
  • Talk. A take or opinion that invites disagreement. Builds engagement and gets commented on.

Each pillar triggers a different algorithmic signal — saves, shares, comments — so a balanced mix keeps the algorithm fed across all three.

Why most "content calendars" fail

Most creators try to map out 30 specific post ideas in advance and freeze the moment one of them feels wrong on the day they're supposed to post it. The pillar system avoids that by being a category, not a calendar. You decide on the day what specifically to post, but you always know what kind of post is due.

The weekly mix

A working rotation for daily posters: 3 Teach posts, 2 Tell posts, 2 Talk posts per week. For 3-posts-a-week creators: 1 of each. Track which pillar lands hardest with your audience over 4 weeks and tilt the mix slightly toward the winner — but keep all three in rotation, always.

Idea generators inside each pillar

When you sit down to post under a pillar, use a prompt instead of a blank page:

  • Teach prompts: "The single thing I'd tell a beginner about X." "What I changed about X this year and why." "The 3-step version of X that works in 80% of cases."
  • Tell prompts: "The moment I realized X." "What happened when I tried X." "A real conversation with a client about X."
  • Talk prompts: "Most people get X wrong because…" "I disagree with the popular advice on X." "The reason X is more important than Y."

The pillar test for every post

Before you hit publish, ask: which pillar is this? If you can't answer in one word, the post is unfocused. Rewrite until it clearly belongs in one box. Posts that try to be all three usually land as none.

How to Get Started Now

  1. Write your three pillars on a sticky note where you write — Teach, Tell, Talk — and commit to them for 90 days.
  2. Brainstorm 5 specific post ideas under each pillar in one sitting so you start with 15 ready prompts, not zero.
  3. Schedule one post of each pillar for the next 7 days using the prompts as starting points.
  4. After 3 weeks, score which pillar consistently produces your best-performing posts.
  5. Tilt the mix toward the winning pillar by one post per week, but never drop the other two — variety feeds the algorithm.
